During my trip to Washington for the School Counselor of the Year Ceremony I delivered cards to Michelle Obama from many students at CRES. This is her response.

Coastal Ridge Elementary School Counselor
Welcome to the 2017-18 school year. It is my absolute pleasure to be the school counselor at Coastal Ridge.
We have worked hard this fall to make our school a safe, respectful, environment where everyone feels welcome and ready to learn. We started off the school year reading the “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?”. The premise of the book is the idea we all carry an invisible bucket with us that contains our feelings. When our bucket is full, we feel great. When our bucket is empty, we feel sad. A bucket filler is someone who says or does nice things for other people. By doing this, they are filling other people’s buckets and filling their own at the same time. During the school year we will find lots of ways to be bucket fillers.
It is a joy for me to be the school counselor at CRES. "The elementary years are a time when students begin to develop their academic self-concept and their feelings of competence and confidence as learners. They are beginning to develop decision-making, communication and life skills, as well as character values. It is also a time when students develop and acquire attitudes toward school, self, peers, social groups and family” (ASCA, 2010).
The mission of the Coastal Ridge Elementary School’s counseling program is to provide a comprehensive developmental counseling program that educates, inspires, and challenges children to be ethical citizens who will make a difference in a changing and complex world. The school counseling program strives to develop partnerships with all stakeholders that facilitates learning and inspires children to excel. The program includes: classroom lessons, small group and individual counseling, consultation, coordination of services and crisis intervention. I work as a team with school staff, parents and community to create a caring climate and atmosphere where students can reach their academic potential.

What seperates successful students from those who struggle? It is something called "GRIT".
